Obtained his B.S. from National Technical University of Athens in 1983 and M.S. and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and Solid Mechanics from Brown University, U.S.A. in 1987 and 1989 respectively. He became Docent of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden in 1993. He was assistant and associate professor at the Department of Solid Mechanics of the KTH in 1989 and 1993 respectively. He was senior researcher at the Department of Materials Science of MIT from 1995 to 2001 and served as deputy Editor to Acta Materialia and Scripta Materialia in the period 1998-2001. He became associate and full professor at the Department of Civil Engineering of University of Thessaly in 2001 and 2005 respectively. He founded the Laboratory for Strength of Materials and Micromechanics in 2003 and is currently its director. He is co-founder of the Center for Research and Technology Development of Thessaly and of NOVA MECHANICA S.A. , spin-off company. Professor Giannakopoulos made contributions to fracture and contact mechanics of metals, ceramics and rubber materials. He has explored indentation of Functionally Graded Composites, piezoelectric and piezomagnetic materials. Related topics include fretting fatigue, metal forming and friction. His work extends in FEM, analytical methods and experiments. Recently, he is working on topics of bioengineering, fatigue of MEMS, textiles and strain gradient elasticity. Over the years, Professor Giannakopoulos has published more than 78 papers in peer reviewed international journals, 15 papers in conference proceedings, 1 book and has co-authored 9 international patents.

None of the managing team has any form of conflicting interest with the Greek Public sector, as well as with other companies that specialize in specifically protected trades.
